Josh Sweat is a free agent after playing all 7 years of his career on the Eagles. Sweat is one of the best free agents in the class and plays a premium position, so he should command a deal upwards of 15 million dollars per year. Sweat has been a productive player for the Eagles, tallying 6 or more sacks in each of the last 5 seasons, including 8 last year. Take into consideration these factors. Sweat is one of the best players in this free-agent class. He’s the best edge defender in the class when considering his age (27). He’s coming off an incredible Super Bowl performance where he recorded 2.5 sacks. Lastly, this free agent class is considered around the league to be weak, and there are many teams with loads of cap space to spend and a need at edge rusher. These factors should contribute to Sweat being overpaid on his upcoming contract. There is a definite possibility he gets a deal into the 20-something dollar range annually. I’m sure most Eagles fans would agree that Josh Sweat has been a good, not great edge starter in his tenure with the Eagles, and he is about to be paid like a great one. So, even if the Eagles could afford Sweat (they can’t), they should feel good about the decision to let him walk.
